In 2018, the poverty level in Honduras sat at 52.6%, according to Macrotrends. In a country where more than half the population lives in desperate poverty, La Promesa Honduras is a voice for those in need as well as a conduit between those in need and the church.

Our day-to-day work represents our commitment to family-based care and to the belief that children belong in safe homes with loving families.  La Promesa meets people in some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives and provides quality and accessible professional services in the areas of trauma-informed counseling and mental health treatment, family preservation and foster care, training and professional development.  We consider it an honor and a privilege to step into the space between tragedy and hope and extend tangible affirmation of God’s immeasurable love to people when they need it the most.

When it comes to engaging the Deaf and disability communities who are also at-risk, the opportunity for education is very limited. In 2010, only 15% of deaf children received special education, as noted in a 2010 paper by Holly Williams entitled, A Sociolinguistic Survey of the Honduran Deaf Community. In addition, more recent data shows that less than 5% of the Deaf and disability communities have high school diplomas, and it’s only in the last five years that the first Deaf Honduran graduated with a bachelor’s degree.

La Promesa brings over 20 years of professional experience and knowledge to areas in education, spiritual care, and language development in the Deaf and disability communities

Ministry Achievements

As we reflect on the achievements of La Promesa Honduras and the overwhelming needs we’ve encountered since its inception, we are reminded of the starfish parable. A storm caused a mass stranding of starfish.  A young child saw the starfish and tossed them in the ocean, one at a time. When asked why he was wasting his time since he couldn’t possibly save them all, he simply replied: “Because it makes a difference to this one.” We are convinced that competent and compassionate response to the needs of vulnerable children and at-risk families, one at a time, and the relationships that result from such a response make a difference in the lives of each person we are serving.

Ministry Inception to 2019

  • Four children were placed in safe homes with loving families when they were no longer able to live with their own families.
  • More than 400 caregivers and professionals serving over 600 children in orphanages, foster homes, disadvantaged schools, and community mentoring programs received training in trauma competent care, preparing them to play an active role in helping children heal from the pain of the past and difficult life circumstances.
  • La Promesa Honduras supported the Bible Translation Project, Happy Hands Christian School for Deaf Children, and ONE WAY Evangelical Deaf Church with over 800 hours of consultation and facilitation paving the way for a stronger community equipped with tools for greater life fulfillment.
  • More than 50 children and families were impacted by trauma-informed counseling and mental health services, ensuring that they were surrounded by hope and help while walking through crisis and tragic life circumstances.
